Alongside the company’s first phablet offering – the Mi Max, Xiaomi also unveiled the latest version of its proprietary MIUI ROM – the MIUI 8.
Xiaomi has announced the release of the MIUI 8, which is the latest version of the MIUI ROM, which apparently has over 200 million users globally. The latest version adds in a refreshed design with several new features including new fonts.
The new Xiaomi MIUI 8 brings in a new palette of colours which change according to the current weather. The Wallpaper Carousel offers random images from over 12 categories on the lock screen daily. The new Gallery is 90 percent more space efficient and has quick controls to share, doodle on drawings, video editing with cropping, adding filters, captions and music.
The Notes app has new templates and grid view for better navigation. Also it is enabled with passcode and fingerprint security. The new Mi Lanting Chinese font provides a better mobile reading experience. The scanner can be used to generate Wechat/Alipay QR codes, snap and shop on Taobao and even solve math problems.
The new Xiaomi MIUI 8 focuses on multi-window management. Interestingly, it also detects scam and fraudulent messages. The advanced Power Saving Mode freezes background app activity, suspends syncs, updates and background tasks.
The MIUI 8 Developer ROM (beta) will be available for the Mi 2, 2S, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 4C, Mi 5 and Mi Note devices starting from June 17. Registrations for beta testing the new ROM will open on May 16. Details about the global version of the MIUI 8 are not yet available.
Speaking about the MIUI 8, Lei Jun, CEO, Xiaomi, said, “MIUI 8 is our best operating system to date featuring several innovative breakthroughs. After six years of continuous iterations and upgrades, MIUI has become more user-friendly, presenting boundless opportunities as a mobile Internet platform especially when coupled with a Xiaomi smartphone.”
