Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi had been teasing the launch of a new smartphone in India that was a “Compact Powerhouse”. While Xiaomi hadn’t revealed which smartphone it’s going to launch in the country, we were expecting the company to launch the Redmi 5 in India. And, as expected, Xiaomi has today launched the Redmi 5 in India.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 was first launched in China last year in December, and, it’s a successor to the Redmi 4 that Xiaomi launched in India last year in May. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 is a budget smartphone, and, it does come with some improvements over its predecessor.
The biggest improvement you would notice from Redmi 4 to Redmi 5 is the design. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 sports a 5.7-inch display, however, unlike the Redmi 4 that has a display with 16:9 aspect ratio, the one on the Redmi 5 has a modern 18:9 aspect ratio. As a result, Xiaomi is able to cram in a relatively larger display without increasing the footprint of the device.
Also, thanks to this screen with 18:9 aspect ratio, the bezels on Xiaomi Redmi 5 are also smaller than its predecessor. Having said that, another upgrade you will see from Redmi 4 to Redmi 5 is processor. The Redmi 4 was powered by Snapdragon 435 SoC, whereas, the Redmi 5 is powered by Snapdragon 450 SoC.
That said, while the Chinese variant of the Redmi 5 only comes with 2 GB RAM + 16 GB storage and 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage options, the Indian variant also comes with a third variant with more RAM and storage – that is 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage.
Moving on, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 boots up to MIUI 9, and, in terms of optics, sports a 12 MP camera at the back and 5 MP camera on the front. However, while the Redmi 4 shipped with a 4100 mAh battery, the Redmi 5 packs in a smaller 3300 mAh battery.
