While WhatsApp is known for its popularity globally, the instant messaging service has now officially hit 1 billion monthly active users.
WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum revealed that WhatsApp, the mobile instant messaging platform currently owned by Facebook, has over 1 billion monthly active users, which means one in every seven people in the world currently use the service. The CEO claimed that over 42 billion messages are sent per day and 1.6 billion photos and 250 million videos are shared. The company had recently made the service free for everyone.
Commenting about the achievement, Jan Koum, CEO, WhatsApp, said, “Our mission has never changed. WhatsApp began as a simple idea: ensuring that anyone could stay in touch with family and friends anywhere on the planet, without costs or gimmicks standing in the way. So even as we celebrate this achievement, our focus remains the same.”
