We have been hearing quite a lot about the flexible display in the last few days. First it was LG which announced the mass-production of flexible display immediately followed by Samsung. LG even announced flexible batteries for the curved display. Now Samsung has officially announced the world’s first smartphone with a curved display called the Samsung Galaxy Round.
The Samsung Galaxy Round, which is the first smartphone with a curved display measuring 5.7 inches, uses the new Super AMOLED flexible display with a concavely curved surface at the centre thus enabling you to wrap the phone around your face when on a call. The device is powered by a 2.3 GHz quad core Krait processor along with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage.
The Samsung Galaxy Round has a rear facing 13 MP Autofocus camera with LED flash and a front facing 2 MP camera. The device runs on the latest Android v4.3 Jelly Bean and has a 2800 mAh battery. The smartphone has LTE – A support. The phone is currently available only in Korea and is soon expected to be pushed into the global markets.
Taking advantage of the curved display, Samsung has added UX features like Roll Effect that enables the user to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery even when the home screen is off. There is also the Gravity Effect which creates a visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device. The Side Mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt.
The Samsung Galaxy Round doesn’t seem to showcase what most people expect from devices with flexible displays. The smartphone is just concavely curved at the centre, which would make the phone easy to wrap around you face when talking. However considering that this is the first device, we can expect more innovative designs in future smartphones.
