Just weeks after commercially launching the much-awaited 4G service in India, Reliance Jio is apparently planning on launching Android powered set-top box in India.
According to PhoneRadar, Reliance Jio is expected to launch set-top box for TV. The company may launch as many as three STBs differing in prices and hardware. Sources suggest that one of the high-end STB would be powered by a Broadcom chipset, whereas the other would be powered by the Marvell processor.
Interestingly, the high-end STBs would support 4K UHD by default but would require a 4K TV for the best experience. The STBs would run on the Android Marshmallow version and would make any normal LCD/LED TV a Smart TV which is connected to the internet with Google Play support.
While the STBs would come with the Google Play store pre-installed, Reliance will offer the Jio suite of apps including the Jio TV and Jio On Demand. The company has apparently already imported 15000 units from Foxconn each priced at Rs. 5500.
