While Micromax has been boasting about being the market leader in the handset business in India, Lava seems to have quietly scaled to higher numbers.
Lava has revealed that it has become the number one Indian feature phone company in India based on the number of shipments as of the quarter ending in September 2014. Even in the overall category comparing the Indian handset makers, Lava is at number two with a small margin for Micromax at the top position.
Lava is said to have imported a whopping 5.3 million feature phones in Q3, 2014 amounting to a total import of 7.27 million handsets in India. The company is working towards expanding its business by setting up its own manufacturing unit in India over the next few years, which would have a monthly capacity of approximately 5 million units. The company has also partnered with Google for the Android One project.
Speaking about the achievement, Hari Om Rai, Chairman & Managing Director, LAVA International said, “India is one of the fastest growing mobile handset markets in the world, we are going through an exciting time. The market offers huge potential to players who aim to consistently add value to consumer’s lives through good products. Our strong investment in a single-layered distribution network of over 1,200 distributors with focus in product engineering and R&D has helped us scale such a growth.”
