Past week, there was an interesting development in Nokia when the team members working on Nokia N9 running MeeGo platform left Nokia forever. Now this move left many of the MeeGo lovers heartbroken as they felt that MeeGo is dead forever.
But now in a Press Release, Jolla Ltd. which is an independent Finland based smartphone product Company has announced that it’ll carry the MeeGo’s torch ahead and save the burning platform from drowning.
Jussi Hurmola who is the CEO of Jolla Ltd. said,
“Nokia created something wonderful – the world’s best smartphone product. It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story.”
Jolla will design, develop and sell new MeeGo based smartphones. Together with international private investors and partners, a new smartphone using this MeeGo based OS will be revealed later this year, which would be great news for all the MeeGo enthusiasts.
Since the end of 2011, Jolla Ltd. has been developing a new smartphone product and the OS, which has evolved from MeeGo OS using MerCore and Qt 5 with Jolla technology which goes on to include its own brand new UI.
Jolla would now be hiring ex-Nokia staff that left the company recently and also many Linux enthusiasts who will together go ahead to evolve and keep MeeGo alive and kicking and bring it in a new form. We are happy to see that at least some company has the courage and love to continue development on an OS which is just awesome.
