Indian Railways is all set to go high tech and we’re not talking about the IRCTC booking portal. Starting today, trains will have Free Wi-Fi services for the passengers on-board. The first train to receive Free Wi-Fi service is the New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express. Fifty other trains are expected to join the list soon.
Using the Wi-Fi services passengers on-board the train will able to browse the web, access email, chat, video services like YouTube and even play online games while travelling. A download bandwidth of 4 Mbps is marked for this service, but the end user speed will depend on the number of connections at that time.
The internet service will be provided using a two-way satellite hybrid with 2G/3G and Wi-Fi which has an on-board satellite tracking antenna, multiband antenna and Wi-Fi broadcasting equipment for on-board connectivity.
There will be strict procedure followed to connect to the Wi-Fi services. Passengers will have to provide mobile number, PNR number, Government ID (election card, Aadhar etc.) for getting unique password by SMS on the mobile which will be used for authentication.
