According to the latest data released by CMR, the sales of mobile handsets in India grew by about 9.1% in first quarter of 2012 as compared to the sales of handset of previous year.
With this increase the overall India mobile handsets market registered sales of 50.2 million units during January-March 2012.
Amongst the manufacturers, Samsung went on to rank as the top smartphone vendor in India with a 40.4% market share while Nokia remained at the number 2 spot with 25.5%. Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of BlackBerry smartphones had 12.3% of total Smartphone market share in India. A total of 2.7 million units of smartphones were sold during January-March 2012.
When we consider the overall India mobile handset market, Nokia retained the leadership position with 23% share, which is followed by Samsung at second position with 14.1% and Micromax managed to gain the third position with 5.8%, in terms of sales (unit shipments) during January-March 2012.
In the sub-Rs. 5000 category Nokia is ruling the markets with about 21.8% of market share, followed by Samsung with 10.7% and in third place, Micromax captured about 6.4% of the market.
So the fight between Nokia and Samsung is getting stiffer as both the OEMs are launching devices in every category available and trying to grab as much as buyers as possible. But will Nokia succeed with the Nokia Lumia series is yet to be seen.
