I will relate one incident here. It dates back to my college days. I was attending a lecture on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) with my friends. It was very quite and everyone was listening to the lecturer carefully (something very rare), then suddenly I received a call on my smartphone and so it rang loudly. I had forgot to switch my phone to silent mode or lower the ringtone volume before the lecture commenced. The next thing happened was that I was sent out of the class for that lecture.
The reason for sharing a personal story today is that we all use smartphones and sometimes forget to switch it to silent mode or lower the volume of its ringtone when we are at an important place. Imagine you are at your workplace and suddenly your smartphone starts singing Eminem’s lyrics. A moment of embarrassment, right? The same can happen in a meeting or during a lecture if you are a student.
How to tackle this? We are humans and we do tend to forget stuff. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could automate this? What if we told you that you can automatically lower ringtone volume during work hours or study hours or whenever you want for a fixed duration of time? This tutorial shows you just that. Read on.
How to automatically lower ringtone volume during work hours
Step 1: First of all, you need to download the ‘Tasker‘ app from Google Play Store. After that, go to Settings > Accessibility > Tasker and enable the Tasker app. This is required in order for Tasker to function properly.
Step 2: Now, open the Tasker app and tap on the ‘+‘ button provided at the bottom in the ‘Profiles‘ tab. After that, select ‘Time‘.
Doing so will take you to the ‘Time Edit’ menu where you need to select the time range during which you want to automatically lower ringtone volume. The check boxes will be ticked by default so leave them as they are and press the back button of your device once.
You will now be taken to the main menu of Tasker where you will be asked to ‘Add New Task‘. We gave the name ‘Working Hours’ to the task, you can give the one you like.
Step 3: After adding a new task, you will be taken to its ‘Task Edit’ menu. Tap on the ‘+‘ button located at the bottom of the menu’s screen. After that, select ‘Audio‘ from Action category and ‘Ringer Volume‘ from Audio Action category.
As soon as you select the ‘Ringer Volume’ action, you will be taken to the ‘Action Edit’ menu where you will be provided with a slider. Use it to lower ringtone volume to your liking and then press the back button of your device twice.
Step 4: Pressing back button twice will take you to the main menu of Tasker. Now long press on the ‘Working Hours’ task and then ‘Add Exit Task‘ and give it a name.
Adding an ‘Exit Task’ will take you to its ‘Task Edit’ menu where you have to tap on the ‘+‘ button located at the bottom of the screen and then select ‘Audio‘ from Action category and ‘Ringer Volume‘ from Audio Action category.
You will then be presented with a slider. Use it to increase the ringtone volume you would like to have after the work hours and press the back button twice.
Pressing back button twice will take you to the main menu of Tasker. That’s it. You automated the task of lowering the ringtone volume during work hours. According to the work hours I’ve set, the ringtone volume will be lowered during 9 am to 5 pm and will be increased again to normal after 5 pm. You can set a different time according to your need.
