One of the most beloved features of Windows 11 was the introduction of the system-wide dark mode that is implemented much better than it was on Windows 10. However, you still need to dig through the settings app to switch between dark and light modes, making it a hassle if you frequently switch between modes depending on the time of the day you’re using your PC.
To help you with this, we have come up with this guide that explains how you can easily automate dark mode switching in Windows 11.
Download Auto Dark Mode
To automate dark mode switching in Windows 11, we first need to download a free app called Auto Dark Mode from the Microsoft Store. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Go to the Start menu and open the Microsoft Store.
Step 2: Inside the Windows Store, search for Auto Dark Mode and click on the first search result.
Step 3: Now click on install to start downloading and installing the app onto your system.
Step 4: Once downloaded, go to Start and double-click on the Auto Dark Mode icon listed under recommended to launch it. If you don’t see it under recommend, try searching for it using the search bar up top.
Configure Auto Dark Mode to Automate Dark Mode Switching
Now that we know how we can install the Auto Dark Mode app, let’s see how you can configure it to automate dark mode switching in Windows 11:
Step 1: Upon opening Auto Dark Mode, you will see three options to automate dark mode switching; select the one that fits your preference.
- Set Custom Hours: This option allows you to set custom times when you want the themes to switch.
- From Sunrise to Sunset: This option uses the location and weather data to automatically switch between modes depending on the time of sunrise and sunset on a particular day (Requires you to enable location access)
- From Sunrise to Sunset (Geographic Coordinates): Like the previous option, this option automatically switches between modes depending on the time of sunrise and sunset minus the location access as it asks you to enter your current coordinates.
However, for this article, we will focus on the first one, i.e., Set custom hours.
Step 2: Click on Set Custom Hours and enter a custom time by clicking on the numbers mentioned below, Light and Dark, according to when you want to switch between themes automatically.
That’s pretty much it. You can now automatically switch between dark and light mode without ever toggling It in Settings, depending on the time of the day.
