Hitachi has developed a new 4.5-inch IPS LCD panel built on amorphous silicon-based TFT and running at 1280 x 720. The existing high resolution panels for smartphones are being made on low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) which consume much more power and need extra wiring for giving put the 720p and above HD resolution. It also offers 1,100:1 contrast ratio and a retina display-like 329ppi.
The brightness stays at around 500 nits HD goodness and the viewing angles is at 160 ° vertically and horizontally. This development also promises to bring down the cost of panel manufacturing and also help increasing the battery life as it consumes much less power compared to the existing LTPS LCD panels.
