Months after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had announced the Internet.org project which intends to provide internet access to everyone, the company today launched the first app.
Facebook has announced the launch of Internet.org app to make the internet accessible to more people by providing basic services for free. The app is first launched in Zambia and would be offer free services to Airtel subscribers in the region. The app is available on smartphones as well as low-end feature phones, which are apparently quite common in the region.
The Internet.org would offer useful health, employment and local information services without data charges thus bringing to bring more people online and providing services that they wouldn’t generally receive. The services included in the app include AccuWeather, Airtel, eZeLibrary, Facebook, Facts for Life, Google Search, Go Zambia Jobs, Kokoliko, MAMA, Messenger, Wikipedia, WRAPP, Zambia uReport.
