Coolpad gained a lot impression during its first smartphone launch in Inda and Coolpad Note 3 got a great success. The company itself targets its devices in the budget segment. Most of the Coolpad smartphones we remember are below ₹10,000 and are already priced aggressively. Coolpad has now launched its latest smartphone Coolpad Note 5 in India and here are our hands-on with Coolpad Note 5.

Last year’s Coolpad Note 3 was notably highlighting its specifications primarily the 3 GB and fingerprint scanner. This time, the successor, Coolpad Note 5 stormed with an unbelievable 4 GB RAM at a great price of ₹10,999. Coolpad Note 5 teases its 4 GB RAM along with an octa-core processor from Snapdragon 617 found in a ₹24,999 flagship Coolpad Max.
It comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display covered with 2.5D curved glass which seems becoming a new trend in the smartphone industry. The premium smartphone, Coolpad Max also boasted 2.5D curved design.
At first glance, the Coolpad Note 5 design resembles other smartphones but since its predecessor Coolpad Note 3 was made from plastic, this one is completely metal. The smartphone exhibits metallic design and 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass. Assuming it’s the combination of Coolpad Mega 2.5D design and Coolpad Max hardware.
What’s more is its improved fingerprint scanner which I believe is lightning fast. I haven’t seen such fingerprint scanner at this price for sure. The fingerprint scanner performance stands among the popular flagships.
Though many smartphones are already slimmer, Coolpad Note 5 seems to be slightly bulky (173.4 grams) and thicker (8.9 mm) due to its large 4010 mAh battery. Having a similar capacity battery, Xiaomi’s redmi Note 3 is slightly lighter (164 grams) and slimmer (8.7 mm) than Coolpad Note 5. LeEco Le 2 remains to be slimmer in design than both.
Unlike its selfie companion Coolpad Mega 2.5D, the front branding is eliminated and provided external touch buttons. There are speakers at the bottom along with the Coolpad Branding on the back.
Coolpad still lacks backlit touch buttons while their competitors are offering it. However, its 2.5D curved glass design could give an edge in the game.
Apart from the processing components, it has a 13 MP f/2.2 rear camera with single LED flash. The camera can record up to 1080p videos. On the front, it is having an 8 MP f/2.2 camera surprisingly with front LED flash. Not all phones come with a front flash hence making Coolpad Note 5 a standout. Front flash is probably something new for this price segment.
It doesn’t sound if Coolpad has upgraded the rear camera module as the specs on paper may appear to be the same as last year’s Coolpad Note 3 though the front camera has been replaced with an 8 MP f/2.2.
The rear camera isn’t boasting the infamous camera bump but protruding a little bit from the surface.
The left side holds volume buttons. On the right, along with the power button, the dual SIM tray is hybrid. You can insert either two Nano SIM cards (GSM + GSM) or one Nano SIM and one Micro SD card. It supports 4G network along with VoLTE. The Micro SD can be expanded up to 64 GB.
The bottom of the phone has a standard microphone and a MicroUSB port, not the new USB Type-C. Another microphone is right above the main camera. At the top, there’s a 3.5 mm audio jack.
The best in specs I noticed is the 4 GB RAM, 4010 mAh battery, fast fingerprint scanner. Also, 32 GB storage and Snapdragon 617 add up makes it overall a perfect package for ₹10,999.
Coolpad’s CoolUI is based on Android 6.0.1. Marshmallow. Initially, the user interface looked quite particular to me like most Coolpads out there but slightly new UI design. Swiping from the top doesn’t get you the shortcuts but from the down instead as seen in the Coolpad Mega 2.5D.
To make it a sweet deal, Coolpad could have brought us Dual Space feature in Note 5. Since Dual Space is actually a signature feature of Coolpad Max, Coolpad hasn’t provided it in the Note 5 as for now. If you don’t know about Dual Space feature, read our post explaining Dual Space feature.
Coolpad Note 5 is reasonably priced at ₹10,999. It is available in two colors Royal Gold, Space Gray. The Coolpad Note 5 will be available for purchase exclusively on Amazon India.
