While Xiaomi is sarcastically touted to be the ‘Apple of China’, Apple has now beaten the Chinese company in terms of sales on the latter’s home ground.
According to a report from IDC China, Apple has apparently replaced Xiaomi to become the top smartphone vendor in China. Apple is said to have shipped 14.5 million units during Q1 2015 thus grabbing a market share of 14.7 percent. Xiaomi on the other hand, shipped only 13.5 million units and had to be content with 13.7 percent market share.
Speaking about the changing trend, Kitty Fok, Managing Director, IDC China, said, “Smartphones are becoming increasingly saturated in China. China is oftentimes thought of as an emerging market but the reality is that the vast majority of phones sold in China today are smartphones, similar to other mature markets like the US, UK, Australia, and Japan. Just like these markets, convincing existing users as well as feature phone users to upgrade to new smartphones will now be the key to further growth in the China market.”
