It seems Apple has finally laid down the coffin for the iPhone 3GS. Apple has asked iOS app developer to provide it with retina display screenshots, and as iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are the ones with retina display, the death of iPhone 3GS seems imminent. Any app that cannot adjust to this change will also die soon. Although the official announcement is yet to be made, it will be quite sad, as the iPhone 3GS was the cheapest iPhone one could lay their hands on. The discontinuation might also explain why it disappeared from most shelves as soon as the iPhone 4S was launched.
The difference between the displays of iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 3G lies in the resolution. While the iPhone 3G boasted of only of 320 x 480p resolution, the later iPhones sport 640 x 960p resolution. Launched in 2009, the iPhone 3G was available in India even before the advent of actual 3G services.
Although you might find some cheap iPhone 3GS devices still out there, we would advise you against going in for the cheap deal as there will no support from Apple, no app support in the coming future and most probably no warranty on these devices. There is just one question we have. What about those people who just purchased an iPhone 3GS before October last year, will their phones be left for dead or will they continue getting support?
