It is now official. Apple now leads the list of top smartphone manufacturers. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), vendors shipped 106.5 million units in Q2 2011 compared to 64.4 million units in the second quarter of 2010. The 65.4% growth was on par with IDC’s forecast of 67.3% for the quarter and below the 84.0% year-over-year growth in Q1 2011.
Out of the total Apple had a market share of 19.1% with a total of 20.3 million units sold in the quarter. This left Samsung on second spot with 16.2% of the market share with 17.4 million units and Nokia on the third with 15.7% market share with 16.7 million units.
The competition is very neck-to-neck and it seems clear that the results might change anytime in the coming quarters.
