Kirin 650 and Mediatek Helio X10 (MT6795) are one of the top midrange segment SoCs. Which is better than the other? Honor 5C and LeEco Le 1S are the two smartphones that comes with Kirin 650 and Mediatek Helio X10 (MT6795) respectively. We have decided to compare both the SoCs side by side. Let’s have a look.

Manufacturing Technology: 16nm vs. 28nm
Smaller manufacturing technology has a clear advantage and leads to better efficiency and reliability. Kirin 650 is manufactured in a 16nm FinFET+ fabrication technology with eight Cortex-A53 cores. In that, the four cores are clocked at 2.0 GHz speed and the other four cores are clocked at 1.7 GHz. On the other hand, the MediaTek Helio X10 uses an old 28nm HPM fabrication technology. The SoC is powered by the same eight ARM’s Cortex-A53 cores found on the Kirin 650, however, there is a small speed difference. It is yet a 2.2 GHz CPU but falls behind in the manufacturing fab.
CPU: 2.0 GHz Octa-Core vs. 2.2 GHz Octa-Core
When comparing the CPU power, it is believed that the more clock speed will yield to a faster performance. Although a better optimization is also needed when keeping such high clock speeds else it will negatively affect the battery life if not properly optimized. Kirin 650 has a 2 GHz clock speed which seems totally fine for a high-end usage while you see MediaTek Helio X10 surpasses by a margin (2.2 GHz). However, there won’t be any significant difference in the performance when you notice, but there might be a little difference in the battery life. Honor claims the new Kirin 650 can deliver 65% increase in performance and 40% decrease in power consumption from its predecessor.
Honor 5C flaunts a Kirin 650 SoC with a 3000 mAh battery while LeEco Le 1S flaunts a MediaTek Helio X10 SoC having the same amount of battery capacity i.e. 3000 mAh. The battery life is as important and we have tested the battery life of both the smartphones. Check them out below.
Honor 5C is more power-efficient and we think the Kirin 650 is better at battery optimization. Kirin smartly reduces the usage of the battery by switching to the power-efficient cores without interrupting the user experience. Kirin 650 is claimed to be an ultra-power saving CPU.
GPU: Mali-T830 MP2 vs PowerVR G6200
When we talk about the GPUs, it is difficult to make a comparison between Mali-T830 MP2 and PowerVR G6200. PowerVR G6200 is the GPU unit on the MediaTek Helio X10 that takes care of the performance of the graphics while Mali-T830 MP2 is the GPU unit on the Kirin 650.
Both lie in the same category so the performance is approximately the same. They both support OpenGL ES 3.1, but only the Mali-T830 MP2 has a DirectX 11.1 and Open CL 1.2 support hence, securing the spot in a newer tech, it’s one step ahead of PowerVR G6200 in terms of features. However, the clock speed (700 MHz) in the PowerVR G6200 is slightly higher than the Mali-T830 MP2 (600 MHz) which makes a small difference in the performance but a higher clock speed draws more heat. Overall, they both perform very similar and it’s hard to make a judgment.
Conclusion: Which is better?
No doubt, both SoCs are two powerful chips in the mainstream segment. It turns out that the Kirin 650 is more battery friendly and power efficient as battery life is an important aspect on a smartphone. Kirin 650 provides a reduced power consumption with an improved performance.
