Samsung has introduced the new Galaxy J (2016) series in India and we have witnessed the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) being the first smartphone from the new Galaxy J series with its S-bike mode feature. Later on, the Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) launched at a price of ₹13,990 and ₹15,990 respectively to strengthen their affordable line-up. The new Samsung Galaxy J7 is marked in the budget segment while being the larger variant (5.5-inch) in the Galaxy J (2016) series. The specifications are fairly strong having a newer octa-core CPU, updated operating system i.e. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and 2 GB RAM. Samsung has increased the RAM significantly.
The Galaxy J7 (2016) is quite different when you talk about its design and somewhat resembles the new Galaxy A series when you look closely on the side metal frames. We have seen a few modifications in the aesthetics. The Galaxy J7 doesn’t have a glass body like the A series but feels quite premium and solid. It also weights reasonably (170 grams).
Some notable features in the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) are the S-bike mode that uses NFC available on the phone, a nice and vibrant 720p AMOLED display, and the front flash which we have already seen in the previous variant. But lacks a fingerprint scanner on the home button and backlit touch buttons.
Moving to the back side is a 13 MP autofocus f/1.9 camera with an LED flash. The Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) sports a 3300 mAh removable battery which is bigger than that of the Galaxy J5 (2016). The whole Galaxy J (2016) series features a removable back cover as well as the removable battery.
It is a 4G enabled smartphone as you see the 4G branding on the backside. You can insert two different Micro SIM cards by gently opening the back cover. As the phone supports NFC for its S-bike mode, you will lose the NFC connectivity when you open the back cover since the cover is connected to the NFC panel.
The buttons on the either side give tactile feedback from an ergonomic point of view. The right side has a power button and the left side has volume rocker buttons. When you look at the top, it’s all empty but the bottom has a microphone, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a standard Micro USB port.
Many smartphones are still lagging behind in terms of updated operating system. The Galaxy J7 (2016) is running the new Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow that means the interface is as snappy and comes with new features like the Doze mode, app permissions, and Google Now on Tap. The specifications are of entry level and may not compete with the opponents having a similar price. What we find interesting is the S-bike mode with NFC, the front camera with an LED flash and an AMOLED display which may not be found within the rivals.
