With the telecom body in India providing freedom to switch operators without having to change their numbers, as many as 100 million customers have availed the service till now.
According to the stats provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, more than 100 million mobile phone customers had changed their service provider by using the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service as of August end. The service which was launched in January 2011, allowed customers to switch between operators within the same circle without having to take a new connection or change the existing number.
The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service served more than 2.3 million requests in August itself. In the meanwhile, the regulatory body has now recommended that service providers begin offering MNP on a pan-India basis by April 2014, wherein the customer can retain the number even when switching to a different circle altogether, after which the number of requests is expected to multiply.
