Tata Teleservices Limited has added 2.33 million new subscribers in the month of May 2010 to cross the 70-million-subscribers milestone in a span of just over five years since the launch of its mobile telephony services in early 2005. Tata Teleservices Limited and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited has shown a subscriber growth rate of more than 100 per cent in the last 12 months—from 35 million subscribers in May 2009.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire a substantial stake in Infotel Broadband Services (P) Ltd, which has emerged as a successful bidder in all the 22 circles of the auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Spectrum conducted by the DoT. RIL will invest about Rs 4,800 crore by way of subscription to fresh equity capital at par to be issued by Infotel Broadband. Post this investment, RIL will own 95% of the equity and Infotel Broadband will be a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited.

Majority of the Indian Consumers still Prefer Buying a Low Cost Mobile Handset. This is what revealed by a survey conducted by MediaTek India, a semiconductor company. The survey was carried out over a sample size of 1000 people in Metros and about 300 shopkeepers. It consisted of a mixed group of people belonging to the middle and low income groups including young people and students. About 50% of the users interviewed still tend to buy a handset in the Rs.1500 – Rs. 2000 range with basic functionalities. This is similar to an earlier survey carried out by MediaTek in rural India, where 55% of the rural users too buy a low cost phone based on the recommendations of peers, friends, family etc.

Bharti Airtel Ltd has acquired Zain Group’s (“Zain”) mobile operations in 15 countries across Africa for an enterprise valuation of USD 10.7 billion. With this acquisition Bharti Airtel becomes the 5th largest mobile operator in the world. This acquisition will Bharti Airtel to operate in 18 countries across Asia and Africa.
