With new revenue stream generated, the MVAS sector is set to touch Rs, 48,000 crore by 2015, cited some of the leading telecom operators and technology organisations congregated today at 9th VAS INDIA 2011 international conference held at Taj Lands End, Mumbai, organized by Bharat Exhibitions. The conference kick-started with the launch of the VAS portal ‘Insight VAS’ and was inaugurated by Mr. Prashant Gokarn, Head of 3G, Reliance Communciations. Sharing their perspective on the MVAS landscape in 3G enabled India, the keynote speakers brought to light some of the issues and opportunities hidden in this game.
Commenting on the advertising perspective in MVAS Industry, Mr. Shashi Sinha, CEO, Loadestar said, “With the advent of 3G, advertising potential is big. But the trick is to personalise the content that is being dished out. More competition is sure to drive down prices but the need of the hour is not to be restrictive but have an aggregate. Advertising and content is surely set to integrate from 3 to 5 years from now.”
Mr. Kunal Bajaj, Managing Director, Analysys Mason went on to add, “There are three focus areas, which are enhancing user experience, launch of new services and service building wherein operators can provided end to end solutions for the consumers. Slowly but steadily, operators will have to overcome pricing issues and work towards network optimization.”
Mr. NK Yadav, Principal General Manager – VAS, BSNL further cited, “The switch over from 2G and 3G needs to be taken care of. The customer experience cannot be spoilt on any cost. BSNL has been an early starter and the pick up is just getting better and better. While last year we had 1 million customers, today the figures are around 2.5 million subscribers. Data usage has increased 6 times and addition of post paid customers have increased since 3G. Broadly, the focus can be targeted at two categories, one being the network related issue and the other being handset related issues. From the consumer side, the active users are currently only 10%. With more awareness and consumer education, the usage will significantly grow.”
Entertainment which has always gripped the nation through the years and emerging technologies, will play a major role in MVAS as well. Mr Jai Maroo, Director, Shemaroo Entertainment said, “This is an exciting time for the content industry. There is a sheer variety of content to share beyond Bollywood and celebritites too. We ourselves serve around 27 languages and the target is to go for more than 40 languages. Truly there has been a lot of hype, but I think we are still not there. Our eco-system is not yet ready. But assuming we ready the matrix soon, what will drive the market is simplicity of access and navigation, relevant and improved content and consumer education.”
Shri Peeyush Agarwal, Chief General Manager (Wireless Services), MTNL shared informative statistics with the guests and brought out different elements that can benefit the people through VAS services generated with 3G. “India is uniquely positioned, M-Banking and M-Retail will be great revenue boosters. Through M-banking, different services of banking can be done on the mobile, almost negating the requirement of going to a physical bank. M-Retail will equip consumers and vendors to buy and sell more easily. Such innovative services will be a great boon to the people.”
While its not just about the operator services, the devices also play a big role. Mr. Sunzay Passari, Executive Vice President- VAS & Devices, Essar Telecom Business Group elaborated, “ The capability of a device cannot be ignored and the capabilities of 3G and 4G is hugely different. Computing network is progressive and essentially we need data hungry devices. Infact mobile is just one of the devices. There is little difference between what a mobile, tablet, notepad, PC can do. It is a challenge for the operators and service providers to provide content to cater their respective markets.
The shift in dominance of players have also changed, especially in the past year. Many home grown companies have eaten a huge share of players like Nokia and Motorola. But we are in an interesting era, growth of devices and services alike will boost the industry.”
Lastly, Shri TR Dua, Principal Advisor, Cellular Operators Association of India emphasised, “Telecom industry has grown at a time of global economic slowdown. This hints at unbounded success for the sector. Further with inclusive growth, differentiation and delivering customer demand and government mandating, there is a huge gap that is waiting to be filled by operators and service providers. There are some emerging categories like M-Agriculture, M-governance, M-Law and E-Judiciary which will help the common man in cities and rural areas.”
The event was concluded by Mr. Shashidharan – Managing Director, Bharat Exhibitions,“ VAS is everywhere today. There is tremendous potential for all service providers and operators. With smartphones making its way into a broader consumer base, we have a huge challenge in front of us. Managing data, network, infrastructure with constant advancement is the key to survive.”

Green Telecom India 2010 Pointing Out The Tower’s radiation & pollution issue

Green Telecom India 2010 recently took the initiative to discuss about the Telecom Equipments and Tower’s pollution and the radiation. One of the most ongoing elements of the 2nd International Conference Green Telecom India 2010-India, was the controversies over the supposedly high level of radiation as well as pollution from the telecom towers and the equipment, which include mobile handsets.Rajan Mathew, Director-General of Cellular Operators Association of India has recently conducted a joint study of the EMF of various telecom equipments and informed that the total pollution level of the whole ICT industry was merely two per cent of the pollution in India. Since, telecom industry holds less than half a per cent of the entire ICT total, thus pollution only from it could not be alarming. Also, a plethora of telecom executives underlined the requirement for greater availability of the grid power in various rural areas of the country, for obviating the need for setting up the diesel gen-sets.
Rajiv Mehrotra, President of Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association (TEMA) emphasized on the lacking of rules and regulations on the pollutants and radiations from telecom equipments and towers. As per the data mentioned by him, out of the total global pollution of 3.8 million tonnes, almost 2.8 million tonnes was produced from India, although India has comparatively less number of cell phone users. Mobility is one of the major drivers of communication in India and the wire lines connectivity is quite limited. It is observed that because of this, mobile phones were having an uneven impact on pollution.
In his keynote address, Nokia-Siemens Networks global services sales head Samar Mittal estimated the telecom industry’s energy need would is to 60,000 MW by 2050. “Energy costs are rising” he warned. Alternate energy sources like solar panels were expensive and raise operational costs. Networks used 80 per cent of the total energy in the industry. He quoted data to show how energy efficiency in mature markets was almost three times that in emerging markets like India. Nokia-Siemens Networks were experimenting with new renewable energy technologies and that had saved 1.7 GHz of energy in 25 countries.
Talk on such an important topic must create awareness and POAs (Plan of Action) must be implemented, as it is high time now. Since there is a substantial increase in global warming, it further more can great a catastrophic impact on the environment. Let's not forget, Small Steps result in Great Results. Cellular Operators might in verity help in reducing some amount of pollution.

Wimax India 2010 held today at New Delhi. Department of Telecom Secretary and Telecom Commission chairman P. J. Thomas inaugurating the conference referred to the Government programme of connecting all the six hundred thousand villages in a bid to reach out to rural people. Over two and a half lakh panchayats would have broad band connectivity and wireless broadband access would be the most effective and efficient means of achieving this. In his speech Mr. Thomas said, “The mobile revolution is now rolling & WiMax will accelerate it. With prices of both equipment and devices falling day by day the access would become affordable to the rural people. However, he cautioned vendors and operators seeking to set up shop in India to be aware that doing business in India is different from that in any other country. Even the public sector BSNL has learnt it the hard way.”
Public sector BSNL was providing 60 per cent of the 12 million broadband connections that had been achieved in India, according to R. K. Agarwal, director, consumer mobility, of the company. He expected 6000 blocks to be connected with wireless broadband this financial year and 7800 next year. Broadband connections by BSNL would increasingly over 11 million next year.
Dr. Hung Song, vice-president of global electronics major Samsung displayed several tiny modems that could transform laptops, cell phones and other knowledge devices to wireless mode connecting to Internet through WiMax points. The recent WiMax spectrum auction has fetched the Government 8.56 billion USD. Operators are planning a rapid roll out to gain early mover advantage in a market said to be all waiting for this wireless broad band access technology. He explained how the smart phones from the South Korean company were offering a whole range of creative potential to the users doubling up as many devices in one.
Household broadband was now covering 33.2 per cent of the market in Malaysia revealed that country’s leading WiMax operator Packet One International’s managing director Dr. P. S. Tang. Malaysia was having a 100 per cent coverage with GSM. Drawing from his business experience in Malaysia, Dr. Tang said WiMAX would take mobile broadband beyond voice to images and data and be competitive with other mobile technologies.
Malaysia has given 15 MHz of spectrum for each of the four wireless broadband mobile operators which was three times more than what India has offered. From mobile man to man connectivity his company was moving to man to machine and machine to machine connectivity. WiMAX VOIP phone that now cost $50 would be soon costing only $35 however Dr. Tang was looking forward to the price costing down to $20.
Laying down a road map for roll out of the service in India, WiMAX Forum President and Chairman Ron Resnick advised operators to adopt a flexible architecture, reduce time to market and grab the opportunity create millions of jobs. For the Government it was time for decisions having done with the spectrum auctions. Mr. Resnick recalled how he has been advocating the WiMAX opportunity in India since 2002. There were already large number of equipment, devices and manufacturers and the opportunity is vast.
According to Mr. Resnick 149 countries including India were now providing commercial WiMAX services including mobile WiMAX and he sees a big growth potential in India.

New technology developments were offering lower capital costs as one base station now could connect several villages, pointed out Puneet Garg, vice-president-technical, Bharti Airtel. High bandwidth provision would lead to cost reduction and better quality of service. WiMAX was leading to fourth generation mobile wireless access technology.
Describing the low cost high bandwidth technology that WiMAX offered as a social responsibility that we must provide, Motorola country head for home and networks mobility, Subhendu Mohanty hoped that the Government target of 100 million broadband customers would soon be reached. Internet usage was growing but the concern was on how to push the growth to rural areas. With prices of devices and equipment going down, the chances of providing low cost connectivity were growing. The operators would have to focus on content and application development. Operators needed to build up an aggressive plan to create the right eco-system. The company was present in over 40 countries with its WiMAX providing what he called end-to-end solutions.

The prospect of Value Added Services becoming a huge industry with a turnover of Rs 100,000 crores annually by 2020 emerged at a VAS conference held recently. According to OnMobile Chairman and CEO Mr. Arvind Rao VAS would be a “transformational force” and even by 2015 when its turnover would rise from Rs. 15,000 crores now to Rs 50,000 crores it would be a larger industry than advertising or media.
Over 2.5 lakh villages would be connected to wireless broadband and 3G by 2012 enabling them to access the whole range of value added services, said Department of Telecom Secretary Sh. P. J. Thomas inaugurating the conference. The entire lot of panchayats would be connected through optical fibre and computers providing them broadand services, he revealed.
From ringback tone the next big money spinner for the telcos would be Mobile VAS, Mr. Rao said. Though VAS was providing only 10 per cent of the revenues for telcos, within this decade the situation would be reversed with value added services ringing 80 per cent of the revenues and voice revenue shrinking to 20 per cent. The trend abroad was for services like mobile music, moile video, mobile TV, smart phones, converged devices at home enabling users to switch between fixed and mobile phones, use of mobile for social networking and a host of other services on the mobile phone. The OnMobile chairman envisaged a world where the mobile service providers would act as a “bank’ among several other services they would provide covering health, education, entertainment, life style, personal services etc.
Revealing the technology of micro-charging that was emerging, Mr. Rao described how it would enable customers to enjoy short clips, film reviews and entertainment, and interactivity on a scale never imagined earlier. Farmers could raise and find answers to immediate problems. However, the industry would have to resolve problems like revenue sharing between the telcos, content providers and technology vendors. There had to e close co-operation between handset makers and VAS for this scenario to unfold to its full extent.
“India has a real chance to be the world’s largest VAS innovator due to its 1.2 billion population and its diversity but government has to promote this by providing support like tax benefit” Mr. Rao pointed out.
A glimpse of the emerging video world where you could converse and see the person of your choice at the press of a key, where a range of entertainment would open up at will, where education and healthcare as well as information would be connected within seconds and many other services would be within immediate reach was provided in a video presentation by entertainment leader Shemaroo Entertainment Director Mr. Jai Maroo. 3D pictures and videos would be available on the mobile or on the PC at all times. “We have an opportunity to transform the world” said Airtel vice-president for marketing and business head Rakesh Mahajan detailing how his company was going to use its recently acquired 3G airwaves to enrich customer experience. However he suggested that telecom operators should aim at providing sustainable value in VAS and not just rich customer experience. He projected cross industry, cross community services to arrive on the back of 3G airwaves.
These and other projections of the vast range of innovations on mobile phones on the move were the subject of presentations by Aircel CMO Rahul Saigal and Idea Cellular Chief corporate affairs officer Rajat Mukarji. Public sector telco BSNL was even now providing 3G experience to its subscribers in 450 cities and towns, said R. K. Aggarwal, director of consumer mobility in the countrywide company.
