Special International Roaming offer by Idea for Hajj Pilgrims

Idea Cellular has announced a special International Roaming offer for its postpaid subscribers going for ‘Hajj’ to the holy land of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The new offer allows Idea subscribers to avail International Roaming services at 30% less rate during their travel to Saudi Arabia.

The 30% discount on International Roaming will include incoming & outgoing voice calls, SMS, and GPRS. Idea’s postpaid subscribers roaming in Saudi Arabia will be able to enjoy these special International Roaming rates without any additional rentals. To avail the special Roaming rates, Idea subscribers need to connect to Idea’s preferred partner network - ‘Mobily’ - on their handsets, while in Saudi Arabia. This special offer from Idea is valid from 1st November 2011 to 31st December 2011.

HTC confirms Android 4.0 update on some devices

There was news just after Google had announced Android Ice Cream Sandwich that HTC is planning to bring the new update to its smartphones and will reveal a list of devices that will be receiving the new update. Well today there has been some development and HTC has confirmed that they will be bringing the new update to its high-end smartphone range.

According to a statement by HTC on Facebook, the handsets on ICS will include the HTC Vivid, HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL, HTC Sensation XE, HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G. Check out the full statement below:

Nokia Maps updates to 3.08 for Belle users only

A new version of Nokia Maps has been released on the Nokia Store but is only available for Symbian Belle devices. So if you have an older Symbian^3 or an Anna device, then you won’t be able to download the new version.

The new version has been optimised for Belle and has a new navigation bar at the bottom which has been introduced in the Belle update. There is also enhanced Drive navigation, live traffic services, improved Weather service and more. There is also a 'My location' which shows a snapshot of your location at the moment and is displayed along with options to refresh your location, save it as a favourite and send it to someone else as an SMS. The weather app has also been upgraded for the Nokia Maps.

Major Telecom players to be kept out of 4G auction says TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has revealed that they are planning to keep the major mobile telecom companies away from the first phase of auctioning of the 700-MHz band (considered to be the most efficient and cost-effective frequency) for delivering wireless broadband or 4G services.

The reason for this action by TRAI is because most of the major telecom companies provide 2G services in the 900-MHz band, which is considered to be very efficient. However; companies like Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular (in some circles), Aircel (in most circles) and Uninor offer 2G services using the 1800-MHz band which results in these companies to have a higher capital and operating expenditure. The 900-MHz band has mostly been given to major players like Airtel and Vodafone and telecom companies including Reliance and TATA have been demanding the redistribution of this band. TRAI will be looking forward to these requests and might restrict the first phase of the 700-MHz auctions to the companies that do not own any airwaves in the 900-MHz band may even out the advantages enjoyed by the incumbents.

But this does not restrict companies like Airtel, BSNL and Vodafone as they will be given frequencies in this band if they can pay the price equivalent to the amount determined in the auctions as quoted by TRAI.

BSNL offers free call forwarding facility for Postpaid customers

BSNL has announced a new FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) named Free Call forward Rs.22 for its postpaid users in Chennai, which will give users free call divert facility on all calls from their mobile phones to any BSNL Landline or WLL number. Users just have to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 22 and enjoy this facility. This is a nice move by BSNL as it’ll help users to save more and also be connected.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD spotted with some pictures

Recently the Xperia Arc had been refreshed as the Arc S with a faster processor and some new features. Now there’s another Arc that has been spotted which is being called as the Xperia Arc HD and is codenamed as the Nozomi. The smartphone is also rumoured to be Sony’s [Ericsson] first dual-core handset.

The Arc HD looks great with the same slim profile but we don’t see any curves in the design or should we say ‘Arcs’. The rumoured specs say that handset will have a 4.3-inch 720p HD display with 720x1280 resolution, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, a front facing camera and will run on Android 2.3.5.

The device is still under the rumour mill but we sure hope that it sees the sunshine soon as Sony Ericsson has been falling behind and they really need to get back into the game with a dual-core smartphone.

Motorola RAZR MT917 headed for China, looks less edgy

Recently we saw Motorola unveil the RAZR and there has also been news that it might be headed to India very soon. Well now there is a new version of the Motorola RAZR has been spotted with the model number MT917. This is probably a CDMA version that Motorola will launch in China.

The particular model looks a little different as well. The corners have been rounded which kind of reminds us of the XOOM tablets. There is also a new speaker grill and if you look closely, the flash for the 8MP camera has dual-LED instead of the single one on the original RAZR. The back seems to be the same, all covered with Kevlar, and the handset still has the same RAZR thin design.

TRAI to take serious action against pesky calls and messages from individual numbers

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has said that they will be sending a notice to individual phone numbers if pesky calls or messages are sent through them and will be disconnecting the numbers on second violation. TRAI has already issued 1,122 notices while 111 subscribers have been disconnected and 17 telemarketers have already been penalized.

"As per the regulations, if unsolicited commercial calls and SMSes are sent from individual numbers, notice will be served to the customer and his number will be disconnected on second violation," TRAI said in a statement.

Registered subscribers receiving pesky messages or calls can lodge their complaints by dialling or sending an SMS to 1909

Asus Transformer Prime has some breath-taking benchmark results

The first quad-core tablet, the Transformer Prime by Asus is going to launch this month and are we excited. The tablet will be powered by an Nvidia Kal-El Tegra 3 processor and we have just found an image that gives us a hint of the tablet’s capabilities.

A benchmark result image shows that the tablet performs almost twice as much as the Motorola Xoom tablet which boasts a Tegra 2 processor. Compared to other powerful smartphones, the tablet is way ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Nexus for that matter. So planning to buy a new tablet? Well do consider this monster of a machine which will be announced on the 9th of November.

Motorola takes Apple to the court in Germany

Apple had accused Samsung of patent infringement and had told the company to pull of their products from shelves in the recent past. Motorola has now accused Apple of the same proceedings in German courts and has two cases in favour of the Google owned company.

So, will Motorola ask Apple to remove all of their mobile products from the market? Well that might not be the case because even though the court is in favour of the company, the patents are said to be essential to use by any mobile manufacturer.

The two patents include (EP 1010336 (B1) and EP 0847654 (B1)) and Motorola has already declared that one (the US version -- U.S. Patent No. 6,359,898) is essential to ETSI standards (GSM, UMTS, 3G) and the other patent might be essential to use as well. The patents are methods to use specific hardware and it is also being said that Apple allowed this ruling to happen so they stand a stronger chance during the appeals process.
