The experimental and beta augmented reality app by Nokia called the 3D World Gaze has been updated with some tweaks to provide better functionality and better features to its users. The app gives you a new kind of viewpoint to the world, allowing you to see through the surface (and insides) of the planet all the way to the other side. Just point your phone to some direction and you will see reality in a way you have never seen before.
In addition to geographical features such as continents in their real physical locations, Nokia 3D World Gaze allows you to see geo-tagged media, day and night regions, current location of the Sun, and other content from locations around the world.
Here are the new changes:
- Added pinch zooming and inertia scrolling for the globe view.
- A loading spinner is shown on the left when the app is loading the initial content set after launching. The content toolbar buttons appear after the content has finished loading. Previously there was no indication of when data was being loaded.
- Added a new Settings panel that can be accessed by swiping inward on the left edge (view slides to the right).
- Option for using miles for distances instead of kilometers (Settings panel).
- Option for showing the amount of transferred data on-screen (Settings panel).
- Previewer: items without a title will now correctly show author information.
- Previewer: for items in the U.S., detailed location info is looked up using Geonames (state, street address). (Note: the Geonames.org web service may be offline intermittently.)
- The label for the nearest city is now always visible, even in the bird view and when other labels are hidden.
- Improved performance and stability of server backend and set up a backup server. The app will automatically try the backup server in case the main one cannot be reached or suddenly becomes unavailable.
- New icon for the app in line with the overall Symbian Anna theme.

Uninor revises STV 198 in Maharashtra

Uninor has pulled the price hike trigger in Maharashtra circle as we are witnessing a change in tariff structure of STV 198. This pack was arguably the best in Uninor portfolio as it offered 1,20,000 uninor seconds and 42,000 seconds calling on other network, thus making the effective calling rate to other network as low as 23 paise/min.
The revised tariff is as follows:
STV 198
- Validity: 30 days
- 1,20,000 Uninor seconds
- 36,000 seconds to other network (600 minutes)
Surprisingly there is no change in STV 197 tariff as it still continues to offer 700 minutes to other network and 2000 minutes to Uninor network.
Time for some rough mathematical calculation:
STV 38 offers 1,20,000 uninor seconds for a month so a subscriber who is in need of both on-net and off-net calling can refill with STV 198.
198-38 = 160 Rs
160/600 minutes = 0.267 which is roughly equal to 27 paise.
So we still get an effective calling rate of 27 paise/min on this pack which is cheaper than the tariff available in market.

Nokia has announced a number of applications for the holy month of Ramadan and Eid-Ul-Fitr. The apps are aimed at helping believers observe the holy month of Ramadan with greater ease and convenience.
Zakat Calculator: World’s first Zakat Calculator launched for Nokia devices helps you calculate Zakat easily. Type the amount of income, silver and gold and the user will get the result on spot. This Application provides all the information one needs about Zakat, including conditions of Zakat, spending channels, types of Zakat, and Zakat Al-fitr. Moreover, users can get the latest conversion rates for all currencies such as Euro, Dollar, Egyptian pound etc from on line sources without any efforts or extra fees.
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. The main idea behind zakat is that all the wealth that a person possesses does not belong to him/her, but to Allah and anyone who is in need should have a share of it. Zakat or giving a part of your wealth as charity is an act of worship.
Qibla Direction: For the first time, enjoy Qibla application with panorama technology, which gives the user a feel of actually being present in a mosque. The application shows the correct Qibla direction easily, based on the preselected country and city without GPS. It also shows the Qibla direction based on the user’s current location; all of this is through multilingual user interface English and Arabic.
The Qibla is the direction that should be faced while praying. Qibla is important because it gives the worshipper a sense of unity, uniformity and discipline.
Prayer Times: The application provides prayer timing and also alerts the user before each prayer, ensuring that one does not miss a prayer time. It also allows users to easily switch their mobile into the silent mode during the prayer.
Prayer, the second pillar of Islam, carries great importance in a believer’s life and is vital to attain success in this life and hereafter. Following the testimony of faith (belief in one god and his messenger) is the commitment to perform prayer, which if performed at their correct times and complete in bowings, prostrations and humility will guarantee forgiveness from Allah and everlasting paradise.
Idul Fitri: The Idul Fitri is a theme app that can be used on the day of Eid to bring out the feel and essence of the festival.

LG to unveil the first ever 2D to 3D game conversion engine at the IFA in Berlin
- Category: LG Mobile
- Monday, 29 August 2011
- Written by Kunal Khullar

LG Electronics is in high gear to expand its 3D portfolio on smartphones. The company will be demonstrating the world’s first OpenGL-based 2D to 3D game conversion engine available on a smartphone platform. The 3D Game Converter will be included in the first Maintenance Release (MR) of the LG Optimus 3D smartphone starting this October.
The 3D Game Converter will be a huge benefit for both game developers and smartphone users. Companies will now be able to offer 3D versions of their existing 2D games without major investments. Smartphone users, on the other hand, will gain the benefits of being able to convert their 2D games into 3D effortlessly.
The company has already filed several patent licenses in major countries such as the U.K., Germany and the U.S. for technologies embedded in the 2D-3D game conversion feature. (Apple should read this line)
“Our Game Converter is a major breakthrough for this industry,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Mobile gaming is a huge trend on the cusp of massive growth and LG is determined to be the de facto leader in this space.”
After installing the 3D Game Converter is installed, users can enjoy 3D on previously purchased 2D games (OpenGL-based and landscape mode only) simply by activating the 3D Game Converter. Games can be switched back to 2D just as easily. When a user opens a 2D mobile game through the 3D Game Converter, the program automatically scans the game to see if it is listed among the 2D mobile games optimized for 3D conversion. If the game has been optimized, it will be converted into 3D using default visual settings. Unlisted OpenGL-based 2D games can still be converted to 3D by adjusting the settings manually. Optimized settings for approximately 50 2D games will be available by October, with 50 more to be added by year’s end.
“Far from being a gimmick, LG’s 3D Game Converter automatically recognizes the depth information based on the location of each object and separates the 2D graphic images for each eye,” explained Dr. Henry Nho, LG’s 3D Technology Evangelist. “Using the existing depth information, the 3D Game Converter generates two different images -- one for the foreground and one for the background. It then uses a thin film called Parallax Barrier on the display to show the left image to the left eye and the right image to the right eye, creating an illusion of visual depth.”
