11 digit mobile number may come soon

Department of Telecom (DOT) is considering an 11-digit numbering system for Mobile Numbers as the Cell phone operators expecting that the mobile growth will exhaust 10-digit numbers sooner or later.

I think those having Vanity/VIP numbers may feel the maximum heat as their fancy Mobile numbers will get changed. Most probabaly the present 10-digit numbers will be prefixed with '9' digit.

DOT (Department of Telecom) has already forwarded the blue print to the Indian Govt for the required approval.

Are you using a mobile with invalid IMEI (these are generally Chinese mobile) ? If yes, then soon you may not be able to use it anymore. Department of Telecom has issued a directive to all Mobile Service Providers to disconnect the services of mobiles without a valid IMEI number. All cellcos are instructed to comply with the order by 31st March, 2009.

The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI is a number unique to every mobile phone It is usually found printed on the phone underneath the battery. It can be found by pressing *#06# on a handset.

Tariffs may get reduced by 20%

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has lowered the termination charge for all types of domestic calls. This may lead to reduction in tariffs for calls made from any type of phone, fixed or mobile, to any other phone within India

TRAI said in a statement telecom companies will pay a termination charge of 20 paise/min, compared with 30 paise at present. Termination charge is a charge payable by an operator to a rival service provider when you call a subscriber on that network. For eg : If an Airtel Customer calls Vodafone customer then Airtel will pay vodafone at the rate of 30paise/min (from April 1 it is recduced to 20paise/min). The new rates are effective from April 1, onwards and are also applicable for 3G voice calls.

Government accepts Introduction of MVNOs

The Government has accepted the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for introduction of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) Licensees in India. TRAI had made the recommendations on 6th August, 2008. The detailed guidelines for MVNO shall be issued by Department of Telecom (DoT) after it receives response from TRAI on some issues.

Long-distance phone tariff is set to take a tumble with the government allowing customers to buy calling cards from service providers of their choice. At present a subscriber has to make long distance call by using the operaton of which he using a SIM and has to pay charges according to the tariffs set by the individual operator. For eg : if a subscriber has an Airtel or a IDEA connection, he has to make his long-distance call through that operator only and pay tariffs accordingly.
