How to STOP pesky calls and SMSes

trai-ndncTRAI in order to stop pesky telemarketers more efficiently and to empower consumers against unwanted calls and SMSes had launched Mobile and Landline Consumer’s Preference Registration process few days back.

With this facility mobile phone or landline phone users will be able to block all or certain categories in which user does not want any commercial or telemarketing calls. TRAI also mentioned that, ‘no commercial communication, even for unregistered customers, shall be sent between 9.00 PM to 9.00 AM, so as not to disturb the customers at night’. TRAI also made mandatory for telemarketing companies to send a unique SMS header for easy identification of promotional or commercials text messages (SMS).

Now there are two types of categories, ‘partially blocked’ and ‘fully blocked’ category.  ‘Fully Blocked’ category is one in which the user will not receive any call or SMS from any telemarketer. ‘Partially blocked’ category is in which the user will not receive any telemarketing call but will receive SMSes in the category/categories chosen by him. There are seven categories from which the susbscribers can choose from

1.Banking/Insurance/Financial products/credit cards
2.Real Estate
3.Education
4.Health
5.Consumer goods and automobiles
6.Communication/Broadcasting/Entertainment/IT
7.Tourism and Leisure

Here are the steps to block telemarketing calls.

By dialing 1909
If you dial 1909, the call goes to the yours telecom service provider and you can register your preference through the customer care executive or Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) depending upon telecom operator setup. After connecting, ask the customer care executive for registration of your preference i.e. block all or block selected (Partially Blocked Category) which is mentioned above. In case, the service provider has IVRS system in place, just follow the simple instructions.
The customer care executive & the IVRS system will confirm your preference(s) and register the same in the Provider Customer Preference Register. You will get an SMS confirming the preferences exercised by you along with unique registration number.

By Sending SMS to 1909
You can also register your preference by simply sending a SMS to 1909. In case you want to opt for fully blocked category, send SMS “START 0” to 1909. But if you want to opt for the partially blocked category, send SMS “Start ” to 1909 as given below:

“START 1” for receiving SMS relating to Banking/ Insurance /Financial products/Credit cards
“START 2” for receiving SMS relating to Real Estate
“START 3” for receiving SMS relating to Education
“START 4” for receiving SMS relating to Health
“START 5” for receiving SMS relating to Consumer goods and automobiles
“START 6” for receiving SMS relating to Communication /Broadcasting / Entertainment /IT,
“START 7” for receiving SMS relating to Tourism and Leisure
To opt for multiple preferences from categories send SMS “Start ” to 1909.
For example for receiving commercial SMSes from Banking/Insurance/Financial products/Credit cards and Real Estate, send SMS in the format “START 1, 2”.

After this, you will get the confirmation SMS whether to block all or block a certain category. To confirm this, you need to send Y or N, to complete the procedure.

After confirmation from you, the mobile operator sends SMS indicating you preferences along with your unique registration number.

Tips for International Travellers to save money on International roaming

uninor-logo-2These days when dependency on mobile phones is very high because it keeps you connected to the whole world, International roaming enables subscribers to stay in touch with their friends and family even when they are travelling abroad.

Here are some tips for International travellers to stay connected with friends and family while travelling abroad.
  • Turn on your mobile phone when you arrive in a new destination. This is free.
  • Receiving of SMS is free.
  • Remember to add “+91” in front of the number when you call your friends and family in India. The easiest way is to add this in front of the numbers in your mobile phone address book.
  • Calling to a local number in the visited country will work with and without the country code.
  • It is often 50% cheaper to receive a call than to make a call home to India.
  • Many applications in your smart phones automatically access data services. These include emails, twitter, maps and others. Make sure you turn automatic data download off, if you don’t need it, while travelling abroad.
  • Turn on your mobile phone when you are back in India to register in your home operator’s network.
  • Remember that you pay for receiving calls so don’t expect this to be free as it is in India.
  • Remember that calling international Free Toll Numbers has a local charge which you will be paying for.
  • Data packages do not include data services abroad. This will be charged separately and it is advised to be careful when using data services as consumption in MB is difficult to measure.
  • Don’t forget mobile charger device and possibly an adapter.

Thanks Uninor for sharing these tips.

Suffering from slow internet speed? Here are few Tips for you

broadband-tips-articleSuffering from slow internet speed. This article will show how you can get reliable and speedy internet connection. Please not that it will help you in case you are receiving lower speeds then what you should be receiving. For eg : if on your 2Mbps connection if you are getting just 100 kbps download speed then the tips mentioned below will help you to get the proper speed i.e around 200-250 kbps.

Here are the TIPS for Reliable and Speedy Internet Connection:

1. SNR value must be greater than 13. See DSL line parameters in Modem. If value is below than 13 then change line, vertical, DP or pair.

2. Attenuation level must be less than 40. See DSL line parameters in Modem. If value is greater than 40 then change line, vertical, DP or pair.

3. ADSL Splitter must be used on a Telephone line at subscriber premises.

4. Physical Layout of line must be in accordance with norms followed i.e, Phone Line coming from DP/Pillar Side must be first terminated at a Splitter in subscriber's home.

5. Also Before splitter there must be ----
No Parallel Phones Connection,
No Intercom,
No EPBAX,
No Joints/Cuts in Line,
No Conduit/Internal Wiring.
All the devices must be used after ADSL splitter.

6. For telephone and broadband connection, Avoid PVC wire and use Drop Wire (Copper) Instead.

7. Telephone Line Path should be away from Electrical Lines/Equipments/Devices.

8. All Terminals or Connecting Points must be Clean and Rust free.

9. Proper Insulation and Tapping of Joints must be done. Don't let any joints open or loose in air.

10. Telephone wires, LAN Cables, USB cables should be tightly connected for proper flow of transmission.

11. For fast speed, LAN Cable should be preferred over Wireless Broadband and Wireless should be preferred over USB Cable for Broadband connections.

12. Check Telephone Line/Drop wire for any Cuts & Cracks and replace the same. Use single wire without any joints.

13. There must be No Noise and Disturbance in the telephone line. Pick the phone receiver and dial 5 number digit and hear the noise if any, any good line has a complete silence.

14. If the distance (underground cable) of the subscriber's modem is more than 2 Kms from the Telephone Exchange (DSLAM) then Use only G.dmt Modulation in the modem DSL settings. Disable all other modulations.

15. Try to Use power from UPS supply for Modem's adapter to avoid fluctuations.

16. Use Modem Adapter as per the Original Current & Voltage rating given/printed on Modem. Using low voltage or current rating adapter causes DSL to become unstable.

17. PPPoE (Always ON) settings are much stable and faster than Bridge (Dial-up) settings. Even if there is High Attenuation and Low SNR the Broadband connects and works well most of the times.

18. If the Line quality is not so good or the Broadband plan or speed requirements are less than 2 Mbps (like in the case of unlimited 256 Kbps Plan) than tell your NIB Staff to Lower the Profile of Broadband connection to 1 Mbps from 2Mbps. It will make your SNR to go up and Link stability increases.

19. You can Delete/Disable all the irrelevant PVC values in the WAN settings of the modem other than 0/35, 0/100, 0/32.

20. Use DNS or IP settings
Primary DNS -- 192.168.1.1 (giving this IP will automatically takes first BSNL DNS available through DSLAM)
Alternate
server -- 208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220 or 8.8.4.4 or 8.8.8.8 (use anyone of these)

21. Always Enable NAT, Firewall and Default Route in the Modem configuration page.

22. Disable Automatic Updates of most of the Programs in your Computer.

23. Delete/Uninstall Unnecessary Softwares like Web Toolbars, Screensavers, Weather updates, Desktop Gadgets etc. from the computer.

24. Use Professional Anti-Virus with Internet Security suite for added protection from Malwares. As most of the speed is hogged by Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spywares, Adwares etc. present in computer.

25. Use Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera for Web Browsing which are faster, safer and reliable than Internet Explorer.

26. Install all Security and Essential updates from Microsoft if you are using Windows in your computer.

27. Use Download Manager for Downloading Files rather than using inbuilt windows traditional downloading and saving files. As the Download Manager uses specific technology which boost speed many times (i.e, Utilises full bandwidth available in your Broadband Plan).

28. Prefer Windows XP or Windows 7 than Windows Vista for using Internet as the latter is slower in response to others OS while using Internet.

29. Never use Two ADSL Splitters on same line for any parallel phone connections, Instead use phone extension for using multiple connections.

30. Never let your Wireless Modem/Router Unsecured. Use WEP-128 bits or WPA security settings.

31. At MDF Side (in telephone Exchange) all connections, jumpers and fuses should be neatly connected.

32. In E10B exchanges we can avoid using GD Tubes in Fuses. It can increases Line Quality (SNR value).

33. Last But not the Least, Pillars and DP should be free from Dust and Rust.
