ARM announces New Mali T-658 GPU, ten times better graphic performance

We have seen the Mali-T400 in action on the Galaxy SII and the next generation Mali-604 still in production, ARM has announced yet another chip called the Mali-T658, which has eight cores and promises up to 10 times more better graphical performance than the current T-400 chip.

arm-mali-t658
The ARM Mali-T658 GPU supports a wide range of graphics and compute APIs, including Microsoft DirectX 11, Khronos OpenGL ES, OpenVG, Khronos OpenCL, Google  Renderscript  and Microsoft DirectCompute.

The Mali-T658 will also have 4 times more of the computing power than the current chip available and also enables nice compatibility with ARM’s ARMv8 architecture with big.LITTLE processing, which nicely allows the set to switch between chips to dynamically and achieve stunning power efficiency and performance even under strain. Even though the T-658 seems to be awesome and also manufacturers like Samsung, Fujitsu, Nufront and LG have already shown interest in it, it may not be out before 2013 when we’ll actually see the chip perform.

With other companies like Qualcomm and NVIDIA continuing to develop impressive chips, for example the 12-core Tegra 3 by NVIDIA, it will be interesting to see how the Mali T-658 will succeed when it finally materializes.

Adobe to focus on HTML5, stops Flash for Mobile development

Adobe has announced and has made it official that it will not be investing development in Flash for mobile devices. The company will now focus on the development of HTML5 as it is supported by many platforms and also will be helping Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores.

adobe flash and air
This is a major step taken by the company as the long running feud between Apple and Adobe will finally end with Adobe agreeing with Apple’s ideas.

Adobe has also said that they will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.  However; they will continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations and will also allow their source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.

Check out the press release:

Adobe is all about enabling designers and developers to create the most expressive content possible, regardless of platform or technology. For more than a decade, Flash has enabled the richest content to be created and deployed on the web by reaching beyond what browsers could do. It has repeatedly served as a blueprint for standardizing new technologies in HTML.  Over the past two years, we’ve delivered Flash Player for mobile browsers and brought the full expressiveness of the web to many mobile devices.

However, HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively.  This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.

Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores.  We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.  We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations.  We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.

These changes will allow us to increase investment in HTML5 and innovate with Flash where it can have most impact for the industry, including advanced gaming and premium videoFlash Player 11 for PC browsers just introduced dozens of new features, including hardware accelerated 3D graphics for console-quality gaming and premium HD video with content protection.  Flash developers can take advantage of these features, and all that our Flash tooling has to offer, to reach more than a billion PCs through their browsers and to package native apps with AIR that run on hundreds of millions of mobile devices through all the popular app stores, including the iTunes App Store, Android Market, Amazon Appstore for Android and BlackBerry App World.

We are already working on Flash Player 12 and a new round of exciting features which we expect to again advance what is possible for delivering high definition entertainment experiences.  We will continue to leverage our experience with Flash to accelerate our work with the W3C and WebKit to bring similar capabilities to HTML5 as quickly as possible, just as we have done with CSS Shaders.  And, we will design new features in Flash for a smooth transition to HTML5 as the standards evolve so developers can confidently invest knowing their skills will continue to be leveraged.

We are super excited about the next generations of HTML5 and Flash.  Together they offer developers and content publishers great options for delivering compelling web and application experiences across PCs and devices.  There is already amazing work being done that is pushing the newest boundaries, and we can’t wait to see what is still yet to come!

HTC may not be the first vendor to adopt Tegra 3 for its smartphones

Two days ago we saw some leaked information about HTC Edge which will be HTC’s first device to run on Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor, but if you were thinking that it would be the first Smartphone to run on the advanced CPU, just like Transformer Prime will be in tablets then you may be wrong.

Tegra 3
According to reports, HTC Edge may not be the first device to run the Tegra 3 CPU as Motorola, Samsung and LG have already adopted Tegra 3 for future smartphones.

Nvidia had yesterday announced the Tegra 3 processor, bringing PC-class performance levels, claiming better battery life and improved mobile experiences to tablets and phones. The Tegra 3 processor is said to provide up to three times the graphics performance of Tegra 2, and up to 61% lower power consumption, translating to 12 hours of battery life for HD video playback.

Nvidia unveils Tegra 3 CPU, improves performance while improving battery life

Tegra 3
Nvidia has today unveiled the successor to its Tegra 2 CPU bringing in more performance and improved battery life for future mobile devices. Initially code-named as Kal-El, now known as the Tegra 3, Nvidia has bundled three times the graphics performance of Tegra 2, and up to 61 percent lower power consumption in the Tegra 3.

Key features of Tegra 3 CPU are

  • It is world's first quad-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU
  • Uses a new vSMP (Variable Symmetric Multiprocessing) technology, including a fifth CPU core that runs at a lower frequency and operates at exceptionally low power
  • New video engines with support for 1080p high profile video at 40 Mbps
  • 12-core GeForce GPU, with 3x the graphics performance of the Tegra 2 processor, including support for stereoscopic 3D

The Tegra 3 is built with five CPU cores; four of them are for high performance tasks like Webpage loading, games and others, and one low performance core known as the companion core which is responsible for lower performance tasks like listening to music and watching HD video.

According to Nvidia, performance improvements over with Tegra 3 will come in many ways. There will be smoother webpage scrolling, to two times faster flash performance with higher frame rates and smoother animation; up to three times faster HTML 5 and Web GL performance; smoother steaming video performance and smoother frame rates and more particle and shadier effects in games.

The Tegra 3 is combined by 12-core Nvidia GeForce GPU which will be a treat for gamers as it provides high performance, control and excellent video performance on touch screen panels. By the end of 2011 about 40 games will be available taking advantage of Tegra 3’s advanced performance. And about 15 games are currently under development and head to Tegra Zone, which is Nvidia's Android Market app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor.

Alcatel One Touch 995, rumoured to launch with Android ICS

alcatel one touch 995
We’ve just bumped across a new handset leak from Alcatel. The One Touch 995 is going to be an Android handset, but what’s special is that rumours say it might just launch with the recently announced Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich update.

For now the leaked specs of the handset include a 4.3-inch touchscreen, Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, a 1.4-GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera and a front facing camera and a 3D carousel UI. The company is planning to launch the handset at the Mobile World Congress 2012 and they confirm that if they don’t launch the handset with ICS, they will provide the update as soon as possible.

The price of the handset is rumoured to fall around 200 Euros, which seems very cheap for a handset that will support the new Android update.
