Wondering why you are getting slow internet speed from last 2 days? Don't scratch your head or shout on Customer Care Executive of your Internet Service Provider. The reason behind the slow internet speed is Bandwidth outage due to planned maintenance by various International Bandwidth Providers.
Those who like to read stories, read further. Here is mine. On 25th suddenly when I was downloading a file from internet I realized that I was not getting the speed which I should, I thought it might be a temporary glitch. I called BSNL office to know the reason and I was vaguely informed about some planned maintenance. On the same day while surfing on my mobile I realized that my surfing speed was too slow and on checking the speed I realized my speeds were down by 66%. At that time I realized that its not just BSNL subscribers but other people using different telecom operators must be facing the same issue.
Yesterday, I received a mail, from one of my friends working in a Telecom company, about this which cleared all my doubts and after reading the mail I was like 'What the Hell!'. Here is what I learned from that mail.
The reason of slow speed is Bandwidth outage due to planned maintenance by various International Bandwidth Providers. This Planned Bandwidth Outage was started on 25th July 2011 and will end on 31st July 2011.
So people be ready as we have to suffer from slow internet speeds for coming few days.

Communications & Information Technology of India, the GSMA, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will be working together to facilitate the growth of Mobile Broadband services across India. A seminar took place in New Delhi called the Mobile Broadband - India Empowering the Mobile Ecosystem summarizing the details of the collaboration. This collaboration between the Indian government, the regulatory authority and the mobile community will surely bear some good results.
All of the departments had their own views about this new step for Mobile Broadband in India.
The Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Mr. Kapil Sibal said, “India has always been a global leader in information technology, providing the world with much needed leadership and direction in IT and research and development. However, it is time to bring the Internet revolution to our rural communities and I believe Mobile Broadband will play a significant role in achieving this. The Indian government understands the need for wireless broadband connectivity and is working towards making adequate spectrum available to support these services.”
“TRAI is committed to developing an ecosystem to meet the need to connect our citizens in line with the National Broadband Plan. Mobile Broadband will play a significant role in meeting our target of 160 million broadband connections by 2014,” commented Dr. J.S. Sarma, Chairman, TRAI.
We also saw Mr. Sanjay Kapoor, Chairman, COAI and CEO, Bharti Airtel India & South who had this to say: “The global mobile industry achieved an important milestone last year when mobile data traffic surpassed total voice traffic. With the exponential growth of Internet users in India it is only a matter of time when we will follow suit. In witnessing the rapid adoption of mobile voice services, I am convinced that India will soon be at the forefront of next-generation Mobile Broadband technology. COAI is committed to working with the GSMA, TRAI and the government to meet the demands of Mobile Broadband and to provide universal Internet connectivity that will empower and enrich the lives of millions of Indians.”
Rob Conway, CEO, GSMA commented: “Mobile Broadband has transformed the reach of the Internet, with more than 450 million connections across the globe. Through sufficient spectrum allocation, India can become a leader in the provision of Mobile Broadband and take advantage of the huge economic benefits, which could generate more than INR 3,146 billion to India’s GDP by 2020. We fully support the Indian government in its efforts to connect all its citizens to the Internet and look forward to the early release of spectrum in both the 700MHz and 2.6GHz bands in line with international efforts.”
With this joining of different sectors, there will surely be development in the mobile broadband services as well as it will serve better for the economy of the country.

5 lakh villages to have broadband in the next 18 months : Telecom Ministry
- Category: BroadBand

- Written by MobiGyaan Team

Villages across the country, about 5 lakh to be precise, will be served with broadband in the next one and a half years. The Telecom industry is aiming for this goal and will be providing a subsidy to both state-owned and private service provider operators from the Universal Service Obligation Fund for this purpose.
The USO Fund was set-up in 2002 in order to provide mobile services and broadband connectivity in rural and remote areas of the country. As of December 31, 2010, the fund has a total size of Rs 13,789.28 crore.
A source from the department of telecom said, "Wireless broadband to cover about five lakh villages... time period, you see, we hope that the majority of this should be completed in one-and-a-half years from the date of signing of the agreement. So that (signing of agreement) process will take 2-3 months, so we are processing the tender for the same. Hopefully the whole process will take 2-3 months, which includes advertising, examination of the tender and signing of the agreement. After that, our expectation is one-and-a-half years to reach close to five lakh villages. By the end of this financial year, we would be having roughly the fund position to be at Rs 17,000 crore. Every year, the flows are to the extent less than Rs 6,000 crore and whatever we spend, it gets deducted from that. So whatever funds it takes, Rs 5,000 crore or Rs 10,000 crore, we have money to do that. So I don't want to put a figure on it. So whatever money it takes, we have the money to do it."
The 'Rural Wireline Broadband' scheme of USOF has provided a total of 2, 61,413 broadband connections and 2,506 kiosks till January 31, 2011, in rural and remote areas of the country, against a target of 8, 88,832 connections and 28,762 kiosks by 2014.
