BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Curve 9360 get certified by MasterCard Worldwide as PayPass-approved devices

Blackberry-Bold-9900
Research In Motion has announced that its BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Curve 9360 smart phones have become the first SIM-based NFC handsets to receive MasterCard PayPass certification. The manufacturer will now be able to turn its new smartphones into mobile wallets and take full advantage of the NFC payments services. RIM said its smartphones were granted the certification after they met the functionality, interoperability and security requirements set by MasterCard. France Telecom-Orange has become one of the first carriers to give RIM and its devices its support.

With this, any bank around the world offering the MasterCard PayPass technology can now deploy PayPass accounts directly to the SIM card on both smartphones, enabling owners to make contactless mobile purchases wherever PayPass is accepted.

“NFC technology is making Smartphones even smarter and the MasterCard certification is a significant step forward in helping transform the way we use mobile devices for payments. We are working proactively with our carrier partners, banks, retailers and other industry players and we are excited to push the boundaries of how NFC can enable new mobile experiences for BlackBerry Smartphone users around the world.” said Andrew Bocking, Vice President of Handheld Software Product Management at RIM.

BlackBerry 9980, a RIM and Porsche Design combo

bold 9980 porsche
Sometime back we had shared with you images and details about a probable Bold 9980, which at that time seemed to be fake given the design of the device. But now RIM and Porsche Design have sent out invitations for the official launch of the device in Dubai on the October 27. This is the first time that we see Porsche and RIM come together and this can surely be seen in the design of the Bold 9980. There are no curves on the device and those have been replaced with edges. The keypad seems to be out of a metallic frame.

RIM unveils new OS, dubbed BBX for Mobiles and Tablets

bbx
Research In Motion (RIM) has launched a new Operating System for its future mobile devices and tablets. Called the BBX, it would replace the antiquated software that now powers the BlackBerry with a package built around the QNX system, also the engine behind the PlayBook.

BBX will support applications developed using any of the tools available today for the BlackBerry PlayBook including Native SDK, Adobe AIR/Flash and WebWorks/HTML5. BBX will also support BlackBerry runtime for Android Apps on future BBX-based tablets and smartphones. BBX will not support Java, on which all the present BB devices work. It will also include the new BlackBerry Cascades UI Framework for advanced graphics, shown for the first time on Tuesday, and bring "Super App" capabilities to enable many advanced capabilities including deep integration between apps, always-on Push services, the BBM Social Platform, and much more.

Though the BlackBerry PlayBook has not been a hit with the users and developers too, RIM feels that BBX will change everything for it. RIM is also trying its best to make more apps available for the tablet. And for that, RIM said it was giving developers a tool to adapt their Android programs for the Playbook.

"We're doing everything we can to make it easier than ever to submit apps and sign up, we’re removing roadblocks. This is a very exciting time for BlackBerry developers." Mike Lazaridis co-CEO of RIM said.

RIM has not announced a date as to when BBX’s SDK will be available for developers and this has proved as disappointment to the developer world. Let’s wait and watch how BBX will change the way BlackBerry devices work in the future.

BlackBerry service disruption is said to cost RIM $100 million

bold 9900
There was a huge service disruption recently affecting BlackBerry services around the globe and leaving users agitated, annoyed and sad. Thankfully the service has been restored in almost all regions and users now breathe a sigh of relief as there was no data loss.

Now there hasn’t been a clear reason given by RIM for the outage but according to sources there was a malfunction in the data centre in the United Kingdom. It first hit Europe, the Middle East then Asia on Monday and then later spread to America the following day before getting resolved on Thursday. This was the most severe outage and according to the Financial Post, it could cost RIM about $100 million. The costs should include refunds that the company might have to issue carriers for monthly fees it collects for each BlackBerry user. Scotia Capital analyst Gus Papageorgiou has calculated and suggests that the loss should come around $117.7 million, or $0.22 per share.
