Apple loses iPad design case in Spain against a small company NT-K

apple-inc mbaknol
In an interesting turn of events, Apple has lost an ‘iPad design copying’ case in Spain which it had filed against a small company called NT-K. Back in November 2010 Apple had accused NT-K of "copying" the iPad and went straight for a customs ban against the company’s Android based tablet which was seized by customs in Spain and the company was also temporarily listed on an EU-wide list of product pirates. Later on December 9, 2010, Apple also brought criminal charges on nt-k. Nt-k is also pursuing an antitrust complaint for abusive anticompetitive behaviour against Apple.

The design in dispute is the same by which Apple won two injunctions over Samsung in Germany (Samsung Tab 10.1 and Tab 7.7). In August 2011, NT-K lodged an antitrust complaint with the Spanish competition regulator, the Comisión Nacional de la Competencia (CNC), and alleged that Apple was abusively shutting out competition. With the criminal lawsuit proceedings and in the first, Apple's charges were dismissed by the judge as he didn't conclude that there was "sufficient justification" for a criminal case.

Now NT-K is suing Apple for compensation for all the monetary damages and profit losses. The small company is also asking compensation for moral damages caused by Apple. This case will indeed set an example for all companies and may be a learning lesson for Apple as well.

Apple releases iOS 5.0.1 beta, battery issues fixed

ios 5.0.1
Two days ago we reported that the iPhone 4S is facing battery issues where users are frustrated with the fact that the battery backup doesn’t last for more than a few hours. Well, Apple has responded quickly and has released a beta update of the iOS 5.

The iOS version 5.0.1 has been released to developers and is available for the iPod touch, iPhone and the iPad. Apple confirms about the battery issues and says that this update should fix the problems. iOS 5.0.1 beta contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
  • Contains security improvements
  • iOS 5.0.1 beta introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations.

iPhone 4S facing battery drain issues

iphone 4s battery low
A bug has been found in the recently launched iPhone 4S. According to sources the handset is having a battery draining problem due to the handset’s Location Services features.  The ‘time-zone battery bug’ causes the Setting Time Zone function to keep the location tracking mechanism running constantly, draining the battery all the time. One can switch it off but that will just make the iPhone unable to set its own time zone if you happen to travel.

This is however an unconfirmed issue and Apple has not yet confirmed about the bug. The company is still in the process of investigating the issue and hopefully will come out with a solution.

Some iPhone 4S users say that the handset lasted only a few hours, even when they were not using the handset and its features heavily. Users have also confirmed that even after switching off various services and even the time-zone functions, they are still facing poor battery life.

Apple has been a little laid back in the battery department and should pull up its socks and resolve the concerns of Apple fans. A better battery life can do wonders for the iPhone and other Apple products.

iPad 3’s display, a cause of worry for Apple and manufacturers

ipad 3 dsiplay
So after the launch of iPhone 4S, the next thing on Apple’s cards is the iPad 3. And as we all know that Apple tries to improve its product with every generation, this time Apple wants to improve the display of the iPad which is becoming a cause of worry for the display manufacturers like LG and Samsung. According to rumours, the reason behind this is that Apple wants a Retina Display-like resolution in its iPad 3.

According to Apple, a Retina Display would mean having “pixel density is so high your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.” On the iPhone 4S, that translates to a 960×640, 3.5″ display which sports 326 pixels per inch (PPI), which is really dense. And according to sources, the closest that iPad display can get is 2048x1536 resolution display which is a PPI of 264, twice the 132 PPI on the iPad 2. The display is also expected to have a brightness of 550nits. The other concern for Apple is that, whether manufacturers will be able to shell out the displays at the quantity that Apple requires, because the demand is much higher.

As of now, we have to wait and see how Apple and the manufacturers deal and develop the display screens.

Steve Jobs wanted to destroy Android

Steve-Job-Apple
A recent biography title "Steve Jobs" by Walter Isaacson has been released which highlights the life of Steve Jobs including how he started the company right till his struggle with cancer.

There is also a quote in the biography where Steve says "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

So what if he was alive and well? Come to think of it he could have revolted against Google and could have easily started a huge mobile platform war. But to be honest you cannot patent everything now can you?

May the genius rest in peace.

Despite patent wars Apple still dependant on Samsung for chipsets

apple A6
We have seen the heating patent wars between Samsung and Apple in the last few months and now according to industry insiders Apple will continue to use chipsets made by Samsung in its future devices. It is being said that Apple has placed an order with Samsung to manufacture the A6 processor which it’ll use in the next generation of iPhone.

It is also being speculated that Samsung’s manufacturing plant in Texas has increased the production of Apple’s A6 chips. Apple has collaborated with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for all future chipset manufacturing but TSMC is unfortunately not being able to fulfil Apple’s demand. So this leaves Apple with no option but to continue using Samsung made chipsets until TSMC is able to contribute.

It is also to be noted that Apple is also Samsung’s largest overseas client which accounts to about $8 billion dollars for Samsung. So patent war or not, Apple and Samsung are inter-dependent.

The Apple iPhone 4S has dual antennas, no more death grip

iPhone4s
For those who are unaware, Apple has very cleverly designed the iPhone 4S. Now you would say, how? It looks just like the iPhone 4. And then you’ll say yeah the new processor and the camera and all. Well, there is also a new dual-antenna that is said to boost up the network capabilities of the iPhone 4S.

Having two antennas it can automatically switch between them so that your calls remain connected no matter how you hold the handset. The best part is that it can even switch between antennas while you are actually making a call.

Here’s a video demonstrating the iPhone 4S’ new antenna capabilities.
