Department of Telecom (DOT) is considering an 11-digit numbering system for Mobile Numbers as the Cell phone operators expecting that the mobile growth will exhaust 10-digit numbers sooner or later.
I think those having Vanity/VIP numbers may feel the maximum heat as their fancy Mobile numbers will get changed. Most probabaly the present 10-digit numbers will be prefixed with '9' digit.
DOT (Department of Telecom) has already forwarded the blue print to the Indian Govt for the required approval.
In 2003, the telecom department had laid out the 10-digit numbering system for 30 years but the rapid growth in mobile connections has put the authorities to go for 11-digit numbering plan.
China and UK are already using 11-digit numbering system.
The 11-digit plan needs around 18 months to implement as the infrastructure changes and software upgrades need time.
